Most of our Monster attention has been spent on the naked superbike special editions, but today’s S2R is an interesting combo. Air-cooled, dual spark, 992 cc’s, it almost fades into the background in the Dark low-lustre black, but the components, condition, and minimal miles make this one a find.
2006 Ducati Monster S2R 1000 Dark Edition for sale on eBay
Ducati launched the S4RS and S2R in concert, with the S2R occupying the middle ground between the 620’s and the water coolers. The twin plug engine and its internal improvements made for 95 hp, snuggled under the classic trellis. Beefy Showa USD forks are up front, with a sculptural single sided swingarm and Sachs shock for the rear. Brakes are drilled and 320mm, using 4-piston calipers. Alloy clutch plates are lighter and quieter than the usual steel set-up. The 180-series rear tire transmits the big torque and looks the part as well.
Possibly a got-too-busy case, this S2R has just a season’s worth of miles and no apparent damage. No mention of maintenance, so rubber and liquids will want to be refreshed. Carbon Termi’s appear to be the only mod. Most S2R’s have a small windscreen over the gauge cluster, but this may have been deleted on the Dark Edition. Just a few pictures, and a note from the eBay auction:
2006 Ducati Monster MS2RD1000 Dark Edition; very rare bike; low mileage; runs and handles perfectly!!
RSBFS staff has been looking into this bike, thinking that the S2R’s were 800’s, the engine doesn’t show twin plugs, and the clutch cover might be for a wet clutch, and one run on a VIN decoder website returned an 800. Hard to determine with such limited info, but interested parties will have to ask some questions.
Monsters have a latent hooligan vibe, but with the liter in basic black, it’s a grown up hooligan. Just a pair of carbon side covers and carbon front mudguard, and this would be a classy understatement. With the deferred maintenance, the bid for this example is getting up there, but the reserve hasn’t been met. But a fan of the DS1000 torque might be looking past the resale value and toward the fun factor.
